About one in seven people who suffer from asbestosis...

About one in seven people who suffer from asbestosis, a lung disease resulting from exposure to asbestos, eventually develop lung cancer.

Asbestos lung cancer may be asymptomatic in its early stages. There are various methods of detecting the disease. Patients in the early stages of asbestos lung cancer often do not have symptoms. In many cases, a pathologist will take a tissue sample or biopsy to confirm whether asbestos lung cancer is present. The more asbestos a person has inhaled the more likely he or she is to go on to develop lung cancer eg mesothelioma.

Exposure to asbestos can result in a number of health conditions, including lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma cancer. As with the development of mesothelioma after exposure to asbestos, lung cancer symptoms appear many years after initial exposure to the hazardous mineral. Anyone who suspects they may have been exposed to asbestos and are experiencing any symptoms of lung cancer should seek the advice of a doctor.
